As Texans face down an incoming freeze, Whataburger is coming through in the clutch.
Whataburger: good for 2 a.m. cravings, long drive-thru lines and winterizing your home before a winter storm, apparently. According to a TikTok posted by FOX 26's Matt Seedorff, Texans have been using Whataburger's large styrofoam cups to insulate exposed pipes.
The video, which Seedorff posted on Tuesday, shows a Texas house with a large styrofoam Whataburger cup covering an outdoor spigot, with a string on the end that appears to be holding the cup in place.
"Tell me why this wouldn't work: we've got a spigot covered in a styrofoam Whataburger cup, possibly wrapped in a towel… "I'm thinking this could keep your pipes from bursting," Seedorff said in the TikTok. "Whatburger for the win!" he added.
The TikTok shows the lengths Texans are going to as they prepare for an incoming blast of Arctic cold, which is set to bring frigid temperatures and sub-zero wind chills to Houston late Thursday night and into Friday morning.
The incoming cold front is not expected to be as bad as 2021's deadly winter storm, and ERCOT's CEO Pablo Vegas told Texans during a board meeting Tuesday that there is a "low probability" the grid will fail as demand for energy increases.
While Chron supports any measures that help keep Texans and their homes safe, experts have lots of advice for preparing for the incoming cold front (that might be slightly more effective than soda cup insulation). Check out our guides to prepping for cold weather events in Texas and interpreting ERCOT's real-time Texas grid dashboard to make sure you're prepared when temperatures start to plunge.
